Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert Routing and Switching
(CCIE R & S)

The Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert Routing and Switching (CCIE R&S) certification validates the expert-level skills required to plan, prepare, operate, monitor and troubleshoot today’s complex converged networks. CCIE Routing and Switching is by far the most popular track with 19,082 certified individuals by March 2011. The certification indicates expert level knowledge of networking across various LAN and WAN interfaces and a variety of routers and switches.


All CCIE R&S certified experts demonstrated their technical skills at the highest level to configure and manage all elements found within the Cisco CCIE Routing and Switching Blueprint. They can solve complex connectivity problems and apply technology solutions to increase bandwidth, improve response times, maximize performance, improve security and support global applications.


Objectives of CCIE R&S

To configure and manage all elements found within the Cisco CCIE Routing and Switching Blueprint.


Prerequisites

  • The candidates must first pass a written qualification exam and then the corresponding hands-on lab exam
  • Candidates are expected to have an in-depth knowledge on the blueprint
  • Candidates are strongly encouraged to have three to five years of job experience before attempting CCIE Routing and Switching certification

  • Implement MPLS layer 3 VPNs
  • Implement IP Multicast
  • Implement Network Security
  • Implement network Services
  • Implement Quality of service (QoS)
  • Troubleshoot a Network
  • Optimize the Network
  • Evaluate propose changes to a Network

Examination

Completion of the CCIE Routing and Switching curriculum requires the candidates to pass the following exams:


  • CCIE Routing and Switching Written Exam
    The candidate must pass the written examination 350-001 CCIE v4.0 to gain eligibility to the lab exam. It is a two-hour exam which covers networking concepts and some equipment commands.
  • Lab Exam: The CCIE lab exam is an eight-hour, hands-on exam which requires configuring and troubleshooting a series of complex networks to given specifications. CCIE R&S candidates will begin with the 2-hour Troubleshooting section, followed by a 6-hour Configuration section.

Recertification

The CCIE Routing and Switching certifications are valid for two years. The certificate can be renewed by passing any one of the following exams before the validity expires:


  • Any current CCIE Written Exam OR CCIE Lab Exam or
  • The current CCDE Written Exam OR current CCDE Practical Exam, or
  • The Cisco Certified Architect (CCAr) interview AND the CCAr board review to extend lower certifications

If the candidates do not pass the qualifying exam, they will be placed in suspended status and their employers will be notified. They will be given one year to pass the required exam after which the CCIE Routing and Switching certification becomes permanently inactive.
